What is a proxy server?

A proxy server acts as a buffer layer for requests tendered by clients, targeted to other servers. To break down its working into simple terms, a client requests for information from a proxy server, the server checks the request according to its filter rules, and if it passes, the proxy server retrieves information from the target server, on behalf of the client. Proxy servers are used for three (3) main reasons. The first is to maintain anonymity while browsing, and speeding up access to a resource being the second. The other purpose served by proxies is to bypass access/ filter restrictions set by a firewall.

Types of proxies - SOCKS and Web based

There are two types of proxy servers that operate these days. A Web proxy and a SOCKS Proxy. Despite common misconceptions, those two are very different from each other. A SOCKS proxy is usually powered by a system service and has the ability to proxify any sort of TCP/UDP socket connections and is not limited to just http traffic. A web proxy, on the other hand is usually powered by a CGI or PHP script, which fetches html content for you.

For a layman, a web based proxy is much easier to use, as it doesn’t call for any changes in the client’s software or the need to download new software, as is the case with a SOCKS proxy.

Anonymous proxy browsers

Proxies have gained much popularity over the recent past because they allow users to browse the web anonymously. All a user needs to do is, log on to a website which has a proxy server, put in the address of the website he/she wishes to visit, and that’s that! By simply undertaking these steps, you can protect your online privacy and security.

How to use a proxy to unblock blocked websites?

One thing which increments the ease of use of such proxies is the fact that you do not need to install any software to make use of them. You can simply search the net for a website which provides you with a web based proxy service. For example, is one such website which allows its users to surf the web anonymously for free.
